We recently brought together La Trobe graduate, Michelle Lugton, and Associate Professor of Accounting and Data Analytics, Kok-Leong Ong. It was the first time Associate Professor Ong had seen Michelle since she graduated.
“I still remember Michelle when she first appeared,” Associate Professor Ong admitted. “And look where she is now.”
Michelle returned to study a Master of Business Analytics at La Trobe, hoping to advance her skills and career in an emerging field. Now she works as a data scientist for Coles.
Michelle attributes much of her success to what she learned from Associate Professor Ong, who is globally renowned for his expertise in business analytics. He has served in over 50 international conference program committees related to analytics. Even more impressively, his work on using analytics to improve community wellbeing was featured by the European Commission in Science for Environmental Policy.
Since spearheading the creation of La Trobe’s Business Analytics suite, he has inspired many students, like Michelle, to become leaders in their field.
“La Trobe wants to push you a little bit further,” she told us. “It kind of pushes your brain to think more creatively. An average data scientist would just see numbers. A successful one would actually see how these numbers can help the business.”
That’s what Associate Professor Ong taught her.
