Your online study experience

At La Trobe Online we bring 50 years of knowledge straight to you, wherever you are in the world.

About online study

Our online courses are designed to be highly flexible. So you can choose how and when you study.

Learn in your own time and space and interact with your lecturers and research supervisors via our Learning Management System (LMS).

Our courses are backed by industry accreditations and offer opportunities to put what you learn into practice. In fact, our Business School is among a select few in the world to offer courses with prestigious accreditation from the European Foundation of Management Development. This is only awarded to high-quality business and management programs with an international perspective.

The learning outcomes for online students are the same as those achieved through face-to-face study, and the same highly qualified staff teach both, so you will get the same experience regardless of whether you are on campus or online.

With all the course material available online, you simply need to develop a flexible learning style that works for you. Whether you’re working full time, juggling family or can’t make it to classes, studying online is as flexible as you are.

With multiple enrolment intakes throughout the year, you can begin studying much earlier than you think.

Tailored for online learning and real-world experience

We believe in creating courses that combine the rigor of the academic world with the experience and know-how of industry. We recognise the need for developing strong professional connections while developing the skills needed to find and explore new opportunities.

Our online courses and subjects are designed in collaboration with our academic staff, so you’ll benefit from their expertise and real-world experience.

Studying online provides greater flexibility for you to engage:

  • when you want (daytime, evenings, weekends)
  • where you want (home, the office or on the move) and
  • how you want (accelerated or part-time).

How studying online works

Studying online provides you with a greater amount of flexibility. Courses can be completed as fast or as slow as you need to fit around your schedule.

To complete subjects within the study period, we recommend allowing at least 12-15 hours a week for each subject. To make sure you’re on top of your study load and you’re progressing through each subject, it's best to set up a study plan personalised around your life.

Many of our online programs offer subjects in intense short study periods many times over the year. This provides some capacity to customise your program to enrol in subjects when it suits you, and even to complete more subjects in a year than in traditional semester-based programs.

Online subjects include a range of learning activities:

  • engaging with the online material
  • participating in interactive classes
  • completing the required readings
  • note taking and completing assessments.
  • group work with other students.

Your subject material will be available through the Learning Management System (LMS) / Moodle.

The LMS will allow you to access your:

  • online subjects
  • calendar
  • forums
  • latest news
  • upcoming events.

It also provides a place where you can keep in touch with other students and the staff who will be there to support you through your learning journey.

Additional LMS modules:

  • Discover La Trobe will help you to become familiar with the tools, resources and information you need to succeed.
  • Consent Matters course will make sure you understand sexual consent and how to recognise situations when consent can and can’t be given, whatever your gender or sexuality.

We try to keep it simple; the major requirement is that you have internet access. We aim to ensure that your subjects can be accessed from the LMS with using a computer or tablet.

Don’t always have reliable internet? As a La Trobe student, you have access to one of our seven campuses.
