Travel and arrival for returning international students
We can’t wait to welcome new and current international students to Australia.
That’s why we’re offering the best possible support to make sure you settle in as quickly as possible and enjoy your study experience in one of the world’s most livable cities.
La Trobe was the first Australian university to require all students and staff on campus to be fully vaccinated, and we are also home to an accessible health centre that offers a range of services.
COVID-19 testing upon arrival
You are required to get a COVID-19 PCR test, or rapid antigen test, within 24 hours of your arrival.
You will need to keep a copy of your test results with you for 14 days after your arrival to provide if requested.
Please visit the Victorian government website for information for returned overseas travelers, including testing and isolation requirements.
Please note you must have an Australian SIM card to receive your results.

To assist you to prepare to arrive in Australia, we are have prepared these Welcome Guides with lots information you'll need to know when you arrive on campus.
You will need to buy a Myki card to travel on public transport in Victoria.
Getting to Melbourne (Bundoora) and City Campuses
Airport pick up
We are delighted to provide all La Trobe international students enrolled at the Melbourne (Bundoora) and City campuses a free airport pick up.
Whether you are returning to us or arriving in Australia for the first time, we will meet you at the airport and take you safely to your accommodation (within the 6km radius of either campus).
Getting to regional campuses
Students enrolled at regional campuses will be reimbursed up to $60 per person for the cost of the journey – please keep your receipts and provide them to ASK La Trobe at your regional campus. The cost of hotel accommodation is not included.
If you are travelling to a regional campus you may wish to book an airport pick up to a Melbourne transport hub (such as Southern Cross Station). If you book an airport pick up, you will not be eligible for a reimbursement of $60.
Getting to Bendigo
There are three options to choose from to travel to the Bendigo campus.
Fly from Sydney
Travel to Bendigo by air, currently the only carrier that flies to Bendigo is Qantas from Sydney. You will need to arrive into Australia at Sydney Airport and get a connecting flight to Bendigo.
Once you arrive at Bendigo Airport, taxis are available.
Shuttle Bus from Melbourne
Arrive into Australia at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport and book the dedicated Bendigo Airport Service shuttle.
Available from Monday 13 December 2021, this is a dedicated bus service will pick you up at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport and drive you to Bendigo Railway Station in the centre of Bendigo city.
The travel time via the Bendigo Airport Service is approximately 2 hours.
Please note if you arrive at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport at night you will need to book accommodation in Melbourne as the Bendigo Airport Service does not run at after 8.30pm on weekdays and 7pm on weekends.
Train from Melbourne
Arrive into Australia at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport and book our free airport pick up to take you to Southern Cross Station. Once you have arrived at Southern Cross Station, take a train to Bendigo – pre-booking is not required.
You will need to purchase a Myki card (ticket to Bendigo) at Southern Cross Station or on board the train from the conductor(cash is required).
Travel time from Southern Cross Station to Bendigo Railway Station is approximately 2 hours.
Please note if you arrive at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport at night you will need to book accommodation in Melbourne as trains do not operate 24 hours a day to Bendigo.
International Student Arrival Plan
Some students are returning to Australia as part of the International Student Arrival Plan. If you are participating in the International Student Arrival Plan you have been notified by the University and the Victorian Government’s travel partner, FCM Travel.
The International Student Arrival Plan is continuing as planned. Returning as a part of the International Student Arrival Plan means that you will have:
- 24/7 Support from FCM Travel (checklists, travel experience, advice and knowledge)
- pricing and capacity secured
- controlled arrivals
- pre-departure information sessions
- welcome pack.
