When your teachers can see your potential, your world expands. Earlier this year, we reunited physiotherapy graduate and AFL footballer, Kerryn Harrington, with her La Trobe teacher, Dr Marcos De Noronha.

La Trobe graduate Kerryn Harrington reunites with her physiotherapy teacher, Dr Marcos De Noronha.

After nearly two decades of research into physiotherapy and sports science, Dr Marcos De Noronha has a wealth of lived experience to offer his students.

As a senior lecturer in physiotherapy at La Trobe, Marcos is a world-leading researcher in ankle instability, lower limb movement and injury, and the effects of stretching. He’s also the co-author of an influential review of the effects of stretching on muscle soreness.

And, as an experienced educator, he’s passionate about bringing out the best in students like Kerryn.

“If you’ve got people like Marcos wanting to help you succeed, it makes [your] journey so much easier,” says Kerryn.

Kerryn became a professional basketballer in her teens and represented Australia twice in the FIBA Oceania Under-18 Championships. While continuing to play in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL), she undertook a Bachelor of Applied Science and Master of Physiotherapy Practice [1] at La Trobe’s Bendigo campus.

Now an Australian rules footballer and physiotherapist for Carlton Football Club, Kerryn shares Marcos’ passion for bringing out the best in sportspeople and laypeople alike.

“[When we see] our students succeed, that’s when we know we did something right,” says Marcos.

La Trobe is ranked #2 in the world for health and wellbeing,[2] and our sports-related subjects are ranked in the top 50 in the world.[3]
