Occupational ergonomists are expected to have particular expertise in the prevention of work-related musculoskeletal injuries and disorders, which are among the most common and costly workplace problems, both in Australia and elsewhere. This subject enables students to develop their understanding of the aetiology and preventative measures for these injuries/disorders, which are categorised here as: (a) traumatic injuries stemming from slips, trips or falls; (b) traumatic injuries stemming from acute exposures to physical stressors of other kinds; and (c) cumulative injuries that are typically due to combinations of various physical and psychosocial hazards.
