Subject outline

In this subject, you will develop an understanding of the theoretical basis of motor behaviour and its application to sport and exercise performance. You will be introduced to the neuromuscular and sensory systems and their influence on movement in exercise, sporting, and clinical environments, techniques for measuring motor behaviour and expertise and how these techniques can be used to design best practice interventions to suit individual motor learning needs. You will also be introduced to the assessment of motor behaviour research and design a research proposal to measure specific motor behaviour outcomes.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Explain the structure and function of the neuromuscular and sensory systems as they relate to control of movement in motor behaviour and skill acquisition
02. Critically review prominent theories of motor control and motor behaviour, and how they are applied in exercise and sporting environments
03. Appraise motor control function in a range of populations using appropriate testing methods
04. Critically review the changes in motor behaviour with learning and expertise, ageing, and movement disorders
05. Select and justify appropriate methods used to measure expert performance in skill acquisition and motor behaviour
06. Analyse and interpret research in the area of motor behaviour in sport and exercise
