A global citizen is guided by respect for others, wherever they live. It has been described as a way of living that recognises our world is an increasingly complex web of connections and interdependencies. One in which our choices and actions may have repercussions for people and communities locally, nationally or internationally. In this subject you will gain insight in dimensions of cultures and you will further explore your role as an oral health therapist in a multicultural society. You will explore and further develop your own cultural competence through an elective regional, interstate or overseas placement and participation in a virtual cross cultural learning activity and acquire a transcultural perspective. This subject addresses La Trobe's Global Citizenship Essential. Global Citizenship entails deep appreciation of how we live in an interconnected world, being able to recognise the global context of concepts, act across cultures and boundaries, and work with diverse communities now and in the future.

01. Provide culturally safe and culturally competent practice that includes recognition of the distinct needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in relation to oral health care provision

02. Apply critical reflection, intentional communication, client-centred goal setting, documentation, and professional self-management through analysis of own beliefs, values and perceptions.

03. Critically analyse values of fairness and social justice, and applies skills to analyse inequalities based on gender, socio-economic status, culture, religion, age and other issues particularly related to oral health.

04. Evaluate dimensions of culture and applies knowledge to improve cross-cultural communication skills.
