Subject outline

In this subject students explore how to shape a language teaching program in ways that engage critically with specifics of the location, history and purposes of that program. Programs from around the world are considered. Key issues in the development of curriculum for language teaching in diverse program contexts are explored and related to assessment and reporting of learner language development. Students are introduced to basic principles and trends in curriculum and syllabus design from both practical and theoretical perspectives. The relationship of materials, teaching approaches and syllabus to wider issues of the nature of language and language learning and the cultural positioning of curriculum are explored. Students are encouraged to consider issues in and opportunities for transformative program design in relation to their specific contexts. Some experience of language teaching would be preferable.
