Subject outline

In this subject students explore issues of inequality in Australia and in other parts of the world. The subject focuses particular attention on poverty as a key form of inequality and one which significantly impacts on people's wellbeing and opportunities. Students will examine the contested nature of studies of inequality and poverty and consider how these reflect different sources of information, values, beliefs and ideologies. They will also consider and critically evaluate historical and contemporary responses to poverty, particularly those delivered through social welfare systems and international development efforts. Throughout the subject, concepts of social justice and human rights are utilised to critically analyse the role of social workers and other professionals in addressing conditions of inequality and poverty in both national and global contexts.
