ADVANCED BIOCHEMISTRY AND MEDICAL BIOLOGY INTERNSHIP

MED3PRJ

2019

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

This is a practical-based subject where students will gain experience in current techniques in molecular and medical cellular biology by completing a 10-week laboratory placement projects. Students (in pairs) will be expected to complete 6 hours of practical work per week under the supervision of research staff. Students will conduct original research and record their observations weekly in a laboratory notebook, write a one page project background and aims statement, write a 2,000-word research report, and present a 15 minute talk describing their research discoveries during a mini-symposium at the end of semester. In addition, students will attend lab meetings where they will receive feedback on their research and instruction on current techniques in biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular biology and scientific communication.

Subject rules

Prerequisites Students must have a grade of at least 75% in (BCH3BMA or BCH3BSB and BCH3AAB) and/or (MED3MSA or MED3ATA and MED3PRC) and/or (GEN3MGG or GEN3LAB). Students are also required to submit an expression of interest (EOI) form to the Coordinator at the end of semester 1. Enrolment into the subject will be based on the mark average for all eligible subjects, mark rank within the student cohort submitting EOI forms, and will require subject coordinator's approval.

Co-requisites BCH3ATB or MED3ATB (students who have completed GEN3LAB in semester 1 do not necessarily need to do BCH3ATB or MED3ATB concurrently with this subject)

Incompatible subjectsN/A

Equivalent subjects This subject has been developed in accordance with the guidelines for an Inclusive Curriculum. Students will not be disadvantaged with respect to their culture, gender, socio-economic background or disability. Students will not be disadvantaged with respect to their culture, gender, socio- economic background or disability. All information regarding student requirements, assignments and resources is available in the Subject Learning Guide (on the LMS). Students are expected to report to their host lab on a weekly basis to conduct 6 hours of project-focused laboratory work. There are no lectures, however, there will be a face-to-face introductory and project allocation session at the beginning of the subject, and two tutorial sessions to assist with assessment preparation with the subject coordinator. Students will also present their research findings at a mini-symposium at the end of semester. Supervisors will be available for consultation either on an ad-hoc basis, during specified drop-in times or by appointment.

Special conditions Students must have a grade of at least 75% in (BCH3BMA or BCH3BSB and BCH3AAB) and/or (MED3MSA or MED3ATA and MED3PRC) and/or (GEN3MGG or GEN3LAB). Students are also required to submit an expression of interest (EOI) form to the Coordinator at the end of semester 1. Enrolment into the subject will be based on the mark average for all eligible prerequisite subjects, mark rank within the student cohort submitting EOI forms, and will require subject coordinator's approval.
