Subject outline
In this subject students are introduced to contemporary approaches to curriculum theory, design and development in a variety of educational contexts. Class members are encouraged to develop their own general theory of curriculum design and development and draw implications for teaching practice and assessment. A range of different educational contexts are considered. Issues to be considered and discussed include: what knowledge is most worthwhile in the modern world and whether it can be encapsulated in curricula; global and local demands on the knowledge, skills, values and beliefs in curricula in different types of educational contexts; balancing the conflicting needs of individuals, groups, society and the environment; constructing and sequencing curriculum components and resource materials to suit different kinds of learners; application of pedagogical and assessment practices; evaluation of curriculum, learners and teachers.
