This subject will develop students' theoretical and practical knowledge relevant to the construction and management of aquaculture facilities. Students will develop an understanding of physical laws describing the behaviour of gases, liquids, forces, motion and energy, in relation to water flow. A capacity for critical analysis will be developed through an evaluation of the relationships between environmental properties, physical laws, functional design and operating characteristics of aquaculture plant and equipment. Skills required in all forms of practical aquaculture - including simple pipe construction, pumps and filtrations - will be learned through practical application at the NMIT aquaculture facility. The subject will also to extend students' knowledge of aquaculture facilities such as pond aquaculture systems, cage systems and recirculation aquaculture systems for the production of aquatic animals and maintenance of suitable water quality.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Understand the behaviour of liquids and gasses in relation to the design an aquaculture Facility
- Using workshop sessions and practical exercises in the laboratory and aquaculture facility, students gain knowledge on the behaviour of fluids and the construction and maintenance of facilities.
02. Apply technical knowledge to construct simple pipe and plumbing systems for aquaculture facilities
- Undertaking practical exercises in the laboratory and aquaculture facility, students will construct simple systems to gain knowledge on the application and behaviour of fluids and the construction and maintenance of facilities.
03. Identify and evaluate different soil types in relation to their suitability for pond construction
- Students will use field trip, laboratory practical sessions and group discussion in workshop sessions to identify soil characteristics suitable for the construction of an aquaculture facility.
04. Investigate and design solutions for aquaculture engineering problems
- Students will investigate and discuss solutions to aquaculture engineering problems in small groups. Practical testing in the laboratory and aquaculture facilities will be used where appropriate.
