Advanced Topics in Medical Science B (MED3ATB) is a third year unit that consists of current topics in biomedical science including introductory pharmacology concepts, cardiomyopathy, sepsis and animal models of disease; neuromuscular physiology and how perturbations in various physiological aspects result in neuromuscular disorders; the complexity in understanding and treating CNS disorders; and our current understanding of the biological processes involved in aging and their impact on health and disease.

Prerequisites Must be admitted in one of the following course codes: SBMS, SBMSSI, SBSSI and must have passed MED2BMS and completed 60 credit points at second year; OR Must be admitted in one of the following course codes: SBSCW, SBMB, SBMD and must have passed MED1BSF and completed 75 credit points at second year.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Discuss key principles and give examples describing our current understanding of introductory pharmacological principles, sepsis, cardiomyopathy, neuromuscular and central nervous system disorders, the processes involved in aging and animal models of disease.

Activities:
Quizzes are given in lectures as formative assessment of content knowledge Written Examination questions

02. Apply key principles to understand and explain new examples or clinical/research cases.

Activities:
Discussion of cases for the case study assessments will require the application of discipline specific knowledge. Written examination questions require application of knowledge in some instances.

03. Summarise knowledge of disease-related topics with application to a specific 'case' supported by evidence obtained from primary information sources.

Activities:
Case Study sessions are used for guided examination and group discussion of the case in light of current knowledge. Students then research the topic further and write a fully referenced report on the assigned case topic.
