EMPIRES, POWER AND THE MODERN WORLD: FOOD AS HISTORY
HIS1EPM
2018
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
Food and drink are essential to human existence; they reveal the nature of human society and culture. In this subject, which is a first-year core for the History major, you'll explore topics such as food taboos, colonialism, kitchens and cooking, feasting, famine and fair trade. Each week we will use a range of primary sources, including recipe books, advertising, newspapers and film, to help us understand how experiences of and attitudes towards food have changed over time, and what this can tell us about the world.Through reflecting on histories of food in local and global contexts, you'll discover and debate key concepts including gender, class, race and power. Over the course of the subject we will trace food from agricultural production, to industrial manufacture, to retail, marketing and consumption. In doing so, we will bring historical understanding to the very urgent contemporary question of food sustainability, allowing you to meet the La Trobe Sustainability Thinking Essential.
