Subject outline

In this subject students will be provided with foundational knowledge in contemporary theory and research to inform approaches to child and family practice. This subject draws upon selected theories within an ecological model, placing the child within the context of the family, the network and community and utilising a strengths-based and anti-oppressive model of practice which incorporates children's rights. With a focus on child development, stability and wellbeing, this subject is framed within the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005 with guidance provided by the Best Interests Case Practice Model, 2008. Core theories include ecological, attachment, physiology of trauma and offender theories.

Activities:
Understand the drive to a public health model and issues for child protection , analysis the UNCRC and applyprinciples of child centered practice to child and family practice

02. Interpret theoriectial propostions and the role of theoryin informing oractice and articulate the theorectical basis for your own work within current legislation and service system arrangements

Activities:
Define how multiple deminensions of person-in -environment interact; apply ecologocal theories to practice,demonstrate understanding of the social context of human behaviour;compentently prepare a genogram and ecomap and effectove use of these as practice tools

03. Critically reflect on knowledge of neurophysiology of the brain in understanding trauma and its relevance to practice within the context of child and family practice

Activities:
Explore the relationship between trauma and neurophyiscology of the brain ;analyse critical stages of child development and their impact on outcomes for the child;underastand the social nature of neurodevelopment and attatchment relationship practice with children and families and the impalcations of cultural trauma for Aboriginal children

04. investigate and analyse offender theories and their value in conceptualsing child sexual abuse and violence against wormen and childen

Activities:
Explore the theories of gender violence and the role of power and control in domeination of women and children, the relationship bwtween crimminal jsutice and public health models

05. Demonstrate understanding of strenghts based practice with vulnerable children and families

Activities:
Analysis and exploration of the strenghts based practice in relation to vulnerable children
