Subject outline

This subject aims to introduce counselling theory based around the person-centred model developed by Carl Rogers. Alongside a solid grounding in Rogers' work and ideas, this subject will also look at other important therapeutic theories such as psychoanalytic, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural, existential, process experiential and narrative therapies. This subject focuses on the practical exploration of the roles of client, counsellor and observer, via the study and contextual application of counselling microskills, an exploration of the links between theory and practice and facilitation of an awareness of the centrality of the therapeutic relationship. The idea of the 'self as counsellor' will also be explored via the concept of reflective practice. The importance of self-care will be emphasised throughout this subject.
