Subject outline
In this unit students learn concepts, principles and implementations of Web Services. Contents of the unit include models, standards and mechanisms of web services; enterprise architectures; supply chains; ePayment mechanisms; semantic web and ontology; security requirements, mechanisms and implementation tools. By taking this unit students will have a general understanding of the area and should gain the knowledge and skills to design and implement a service application.

01. Utilise the knowledge of the archetectures and implemetations of ePayment systems in ePayment system evaluation.
- Activities:
- Introduce the general requirements for ePayment; Teach various payment mechanisems such as smart cards, credit cards (SET protocol), eWallates (autentication), eCash (blind signitures), micropayment and EFT; Organise class discussions on some of the unsolved reaserch problems in the area.

02. Apply knowledge on Semantic Web to design a framework for information representation, extraction and reasoning.
- Activities:
- Teach definitions of the Semantic Web, the Layered structure and current research frameworks on semantics, ontology, logic and security (including RDF, OWL and OOWIS); Organise class discussions on some of the unsolved reaserch problems in the area.

03. Be able to analyse and evaluate a current system and to propose possible improvement.
- Activities:
- The assignment of the subject is to write a research report on a related topic. After the assignment is handed out to the class, detailed steps (literature survey, analysis, experiments, research formalisation and report writing etc) are discussed in the lecture. Students are supplied with the initial survey paper to start, a pre-defined structure to follow, and are required to follow the procudure to complete the assignment.
