Subject outline

In this subject students investigate real life tasks and challenges and use design and technology construction in order to create a solution. Working with the VELS Interdisciplinary Strand 'Design, Creativity and Technology' students have the opportunity to plan a suitable application of the task to school based learning, through the development of a practical unit of work. Topics covered in this subject include design skills, understanding good design, design processes, evaluating products in terms of design and utility, teaching design and technology and evaluating OH&S issues in schools.

01. Analyse a situation, demonstrate a process for developing a design brief associated with addressing a need within a real context.

Activities:
Knowledge of how to structure a design brief which defines the dimensions of the problem and the ability to identify and access the appropriate resources needed to creatively address it.

02. Identify the skills, processes and structures which need to be supported in order for school students to safely engage in the processes associated with design, creativity and technology.

Activities:
Knowledge of how to structure a design brief which defines the dimensions of the problem and the ability to identify and access the appropriate resources needed to creatively address it.

03. Demonstrate a working knowledge of how to design, develop and implement a 5-lesson Unit of Work, ability to reflect on the process and evaluate the effectiveness of the unit for student learning.

Activities:
Knowledge of how to structure a design brief which defines the dimensions of the problem and the ability to identify and access the appropriate resources needed to creatively address it.

04. Evaluate the quality and effectiveness of a design as a form of interdisciplinary learning through reasoning and thinking skills associated with creativity, design principles and processes that are essential for education in the 21st century.

Activities:
Knowledge of how to structure a design brief which defines the dimensions of the problem and the ability to identify and access the appropriate resources needed to creatively address it.

05. Plan and manage practical applications assisting students with different ways of thinking, problem solving and communicating using a range of technologies to plan, analyse, evaluate and present their work.

Activities:
