Subject outline

Drugs are used in a wide range of dosage forms and pharmacists need to understand the design and rationale behind available dosage forms. Also, in order to properly advise patients on the use of drugs it is necessary to understand the mechanisms by which the drugs are absorbed and interact in the body. Fundamental principles of biopharmaceutics are discussed with emphasis on the qualitative and quantitative description of factors which influence drug disposition. Drugs are used in a wide range of dosage forms and pharmacists need to understand the design and rationale behind these available dosage forms. We will investigate different types of formulation and how the ingredients in a formulation together with method of manufacture, can influence the bioavailability of a drug within the body.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Evaluate the inclusion and function of all the ingredients in different formulations.

Activities:
The key concepts to be integrated are discussed in both lectures and workshops.

02. Advise on and discuss the limitations and restrictions on different excipients used in pharmaceutical formulations.

Activities:
The key concepts are discussed in workshop and students are given opportunities to problem solve.

03. Explain how the use of pharmacokinetics can be used to predict drug disposition and assist in effective drug therapy.

Activities:
Discussed in lectures and applied in workshops.

04. Interpret pharmacokinetic calculation problems and solve them accurately.

Activities:
Workshops are opportunities for students to problem solve and are designed to be interactive.

05. Assess the effects of excipients and the type dosage form used on the bioavailability of a drug.

Activities:
Discussed in both lectures and workshops. Workshops are opportunities for students to problem solve and are designed to be interactive.
