Subject outline

This is a practical based subject where students will gain experience in current techniques in molecular and medical cellular biology by completing a 10 week laboratory placement projects. Students (in pairs) will be expected to complete 6 hours of practical work per week under the supervision of research staff. Students will conduct original research and record their observations weekly, write a 250 word project overview & aims statement, write a 2,000 word research report, and present a 15 minute talk describing their research discoveries during a mini-symposium at the end of semester. In addition students will attend lab meetings where they will receive feedback on their research and instruction on current techniques in biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular biology and scientific communication.

Prerequisites Students must have a grade of at least 75% in BCH3BMA or MED3MSA. In addition students must complete the numeracy skills and working in the lab hurdles which can be completed in BCH3BMA and MED3MSA.
