Subject outline
How do historians 'make' History? How do they research, write and present it and why is the outcome so often controversial? In this subject students consider the ways Histories are researched and written. You are asked to reflect on how and why controversies about the past arise. Students will choose a significant moment from an historical era, artefact or object, examine the different sources it produced (including texts and material objects such as works of art, images or music, physical sites of memory or remembrance), and look at historical debates surrounding it. In the weekly seminar,students will be required to engage with theoretical and conceptual reading,helping set an agenda for the coordinator to address in a lecture/forum. Students develop their abilities to critique, analyse and write about History in this subject.
