Subject outline
In this subject students will develop advanced levels of communicative competence in Auslan in both receptive and production skills. They will also critically examine the emergence of the deaf community in Australia by studying the beginnings of the community with the arrival of the first non-Aboriginal deaf people in the 1790s, the establishment of the first schools for deaf children from 1860, and the development through the 20th centruy. Students will also apprise the impact of educational policies, and of spoken and written English, on the development of Auslan and other forms of signed communication.
