In this subject students will develop an awareness of the concepts and principles that underpin podiatric clinical practice and the delivery of professional health care. The subject also focuses on basic principles of human lower limb biomechanics and the role of footwear in maintaining optimal foot health.

01. Work independently and as part of a team to implement clinical practices that the podiatrist will use in the context of an interdisciplinary healthcare environment. You should be able to: a) Describe the role of allied health professionals. b) Describe the foundations of good communication between practitioner and patient and give examples of barriers and aids to good communication. c) Differentiate between different categories of medical information for recording and decision making purposes. d) Create clinical records in keeping with legal and ethical standards. e) Perform sterilisation and disinfection techniques. f) Make and justify clinical decisions for the management of common medical disorders. g) Communicate effectively using a variety of modes/technologies.

02. Assess a client's lower limb biomechanics, and identify and explain any gait abnormalities and possible aetiologies. You should be able to: a) Describe the normal range of lower limb joint movement during standing and walking. b) List factors that influence the position of lower limb joints. c) Describe common aetiologies for abnormal gait. d) Use recognised procedures to assess foot posture and dynamic gait.

03. Determine modifications to specific footwear that will prevent or treat a given pathology You should be able to: a) Identify and describe the function of individual components of a shoe. b) Explain the link between footwear and the development of lower limb pathologies. c) Independently conduct an assessment of footwear, identifying any aspects likely to cause pathologies.
