Subject outline

Maths Foundations introduces students to a spectrum of mathematics skills required for future learning in general university programs. Students will develop conceptual knowledge and procedural skills in a range of topics including arithmetical rules and operations, measurement and data, algebra, probability, graphs and statistical analysis. Students will be expected to solve a variety of mathematical problems using appropriate strategies, methods and techniques and to apply mathematical concepts and knowledge to different real world situations. Assessment tasks are based on cumulative development of skills and knowledge and include project tasks as well as quizzes and two examinations. Feedback is provided to students at frequent and regular intervals throughout the semester.

Activities:: Online quizzes, workshopping solutions to number and word problems individually and in class groups, measuring and graphing data. Researching global issues and using numerical skills and strategies to posit possible solutions and present to class.

02. Use whole numbers, percentages, decimals and ratios in a range of statistical information to calculate and interpret answers.

Activities:: Online quizzes, games and forum discussion. Research into real world problems to extract data and record it in different forms so that problems can be analysed and answers can be calculated

Activities:: Introduction of EXCEL as a tool for managing statistical information. Research into real world problems and workshopping to find solutions which can be understood and recorded through different means.

Activities:: Investigation of a significant real world problem (disease spread through human population) and working in groups on the development of a mathematical model to identify probable spread to assist in management of resultant health issues.
