INFORMATION SYSTEMS
CSE1ISX
2019
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
In this subject, students are introduced to the concept of an information system (IS) including file design, input/output/interface design, file conversion and implementation techniques. This subject deals with systems development life cycle as a framework for IS development and emphasises the role and involvement of users in an IS project. The use of appropriate fact-finding techniques in systems analysis and an introduction to data flow and E-R modelling are covered. Several information system case studies are used to illustrate the concepts introduced. Students will receive hands-on experience in the construction of a small information system using a suitable prototyping tool.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Describe the Systems Development Life Cycle approach and apply it in Information Systems (IS) development.
- Activities:
- Discussions involving on-line problems and webinars to describe the various stages of the Systems Development Life Cycle
02. Use a generalised model to analyse, identify and effectively describe the components of simple real-life IS cases.
- Activities:
- Online activities and research from learning content and relevant on-line chapters from the prescribed book. These will describe real-life information systems in terms of a generalised model.
03. Use established fact finding techniques to elicit IS requirements for simple business scenarios and create requirements documents.
- Activities:
- Self-paced online exercise, discussion forums and webinars on IS requirements
04. Use graphical representation such as Data Flow Diagrams and System Dictionary to adequately report on the requirements for simple IS cases.
- Activities:
- Self-paced online exercises and discussion forums to prepare Context and Level 0 Data Flow Diagrams.
05. Develop simple relational database design using Entity Relationship diagram for simple IS cases.
- Activities:
- Webinars and self-checking questions.
06. Design and construct a simple IS using a prototyping tool and critique the design of its user interface and implement the necessary security requirements for the new IS.
- Activities:
- Self-paced tutorials on Microsoft Access from Microsoft website, webinars to develop a simple IS in Microsoft Access and implementation approach. Webinar and discussion forums used to suggest improvements for a user interface design.
