Subject outline
In this subject students will be required to apply for a job within a virtual biotechnology company and work in groups to produce and market a virtual product. Students will be guided by career development staff and academic staff on a weekly basis, with input from industry professionals. Students will cover aspects of bio-business such as organizational structure, IP, scientific reasoning, market research, and ethics.

01. Discuss and explain key elements of finding employment in the biotechnology sector
- Activities:
- Each student will produce a cover letter, resume and will interview for a position within a virtual biotechnology company. Students will identify transferrable skills relevant to the biotechnology sector.
02. Effectively collaborate with a group of unfamiliar colleagues to achieve desired outcomes
- Activities:
- Students must work as a group to generate a poster that accurately reflects the work of their group during a 6 week project. All students must be present at the poster presentation and be capable of answering questions. Each member of the group must also contribute approx. 1-minutes to a 5-minute group video introducing themselves and outlining their role in the group task. A critical analysis of group processes and outcomes will also be included in the project report.
03. Demonstrate effective time management while working towards group deadlines
- Activities:
- During a 6 week group project students will organise, and keep a record of, meetings in which they will work towards a group poster presentation and a group oral (video) presentation.
04. Present a report/poster to disseminate a complex body of work to a peer audience
- Activities:
- Students must work as a group to generate a poster that accurately reflects the work of their group during the project. All students must be present at the poster presentation and be capable of answering questions.
05. Critically evaluate and present an argument to support newly generated or existing data
- Activities:
- Via LMS, students will submit reflections on their research and weekly responses to questions from lecture notes and workshop activities. This will form their weekly journal for the subject. A critical analysis of group processes and outcomes will also be included in the project report.
06. Analyse and evaluate the value of scientific data
- Activities:
- Students will research and collate data throughout the group assignment. A comprehensive report outlining the individual student contribution will accompany a group poster presentation with evidence of what pieces of research were deemed important for the poster.
