Subject outline
This subject explores foundations and practical issues surrounding learning and teaching roles undertaken by health professionals. The subject examines foundations of learning and teaching and uses these to analyse factors that can impact on learning and teaching in the practice of health professionals. The subject will scrutinise the learning and teaching requirements of patients and families across the lifespan as well as peers and colleagues. The impact of different learning styles will be explored including the identification of how students can maximise their own learning potential. Skills and knowledge will be developed in planning, conducting and evaluating a basic effective education session. Local and/or international contexts for learning in health professional practice will be explored including classrooms, clinical environments, interdisciplinary learning and community settings. Practical hands on application of knowledge and skills is imbedded in the subject.

01. Employ teaching and learning principles in the education of patients, families and carers, peers and colleagues, locally and/or internationally.
- Activities:
- a) Appraise the principles of learning and teaching and how they relate to health professional education. b) Describe ways of knowing in health professional practice. c) Discuss the characteristics of the learner that influences learning. d) Examine the effect of peers on learning. e) Identify how the context of learning impacts on the learning process. f) Identify factors to maximise personal learning.
02. Apply theories of learning and health behavioural change to support health education activities of people across the life-span, respecting cultural diversity, in their health experience.
- Activities:
- a) Utilise health behavioural change theory to focus assessment and plan culturally effective health education interventions. b) Discuss the importance of a comprehensive learning needs assessment for patient, family and carer education. c) Describe health behavioural change theories.
03. Select appropriate assessment and feedback to maximise learning.
- Activities:
- a) Discuss the concept of assessment and the role assessment plays in learning. b) Explore the principles for giving effective feedback to promote learning. c) Examine the function of giving feedback. d) Practice giving peer feedback and conducting self-assessment. e) Demonstrate giving effective feedback to colleagues.
04. Demonstrate the ability to effectively deliver and evaluate a teaching and learning activity within a variety of healthcare and educational contexts.
- Activities:
- a) Create appropriate intended learning outcomes arising from needs assessment. b) Employ a teaching and lesson plan using appropriate teaching and learning activities to meet learning outcomes. c) Demonstrate effective facilitation to promote learning. d) Employ an appropriate evaluation for an educational session.

"This subject is a requirement for students undertaking the Bachelor of Nursing degree in Singapore or Hong Kong and may be offered as an elective option for students enrolled in the three year Bachelor of Nursing (HBN) degree in Australia. This subject is conducted in Singapore in conjunction with the Singapore Nurses Association and in Hong Kong in collaboration with the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In off-shore delivery the subject will be taught over approximately 8-10 weeks with a three day face to face teaching block"
