Classroom management is an important issue for many school administrators, teachers, parents and pupils. Students consider theoretical and practical issues that are likely to impact on their role as teaching professionals from an historical and current perspective. The roles of teachers are interrogated via personal experience, current popular culture and the work of various educational theorists. We consider the extent to which classroom discipline is an area of interest or concern to members of the school community and then evaluate a range of theoretical approaches suitable for avoiding or handling inappropriate student behaviour. Issues surrounding the development of a school discipline policy are discussed and in this context, the acceptability to school administrators, parents, teachers, and pupils of alternative approaches to discipline are investigated. Students undertake 20 days of practicum in an education setting as part of this subject.
