ADVANCED DIAGNOSTIC AUDIOLOGY 1: OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES IN AUDIOLOGY
AUD5ADA
2018
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
In this subject you will learn about concepts and procedures used in objective measurements of hearing and site-of-lesion testing in audiology. Through lectures and workshops, you will learn about the origin of otoacoustic emissions and acoustically evoked potentials of the auditory pathway, including electrocochleography, auditory brainstem responses, middle and late latency potentials, and auditory steady state responses.Building on this theoretical knowledge, you will develop skills in assessing otoacoustic emissions and auditory evoked potentials, and integrating the results of these objective techniques with behavioural tests used in audiological evaluations.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Integrate and consolidate theoretical information on the anatomical and physiological principles. Demonstrate mastery underpinning objective assessment techniques in audiology.
- Activities:
- Lectures - Additional information (readings, websites) provided on LMS - Components of a written examination.
02. Design and critically review the protocols and procedures for oto-acoustic emission and auditory evoked response measurement to apply sound clinical decision-making.
- Activities:
- Lectures - Additional information (readings, websites) provided on LMS - Components of a written examination - Assignment: Objective Measures. Students will be required to conduct 2 oto-acoustic emissions (OAE), 2 auditory brainstem responses (ABR) and 1 cortical evoked potential case study assessments.
03. Cognitive and technical skills to interpret clinical tests to generate a differential diagnosis for various hearing disorders
- Activities:
- Lecture and workshop classes - Components of a written examination - PBL workshop: students will be provided with case files containing results of both subjective and objective test results. Students will integrate the findings from across the test battery, discuss possible pathologies and identify any further information required for differential diagnosis.
04. Cognitive and technical skills to interpret clinical tests to generate a differential diagnosis of central auditory disorders
- Activities:
- Lectures - Additional information (readings, websites) provided on LMS - Components of a written examination.
