Subject outline

In this subject, students gain knowledge of the evidence that underpins the provision of prosthetic devices for persons with transtibial, ankle disarticulation and partial foot amputations. This will include principles of clinical assessment of clients with amputations, clinical decision making and prescription considerations within the prosthetic treatment process. Evidence based prosthetic treatment of various amputation levels is presented in the context of contemporary clinical practice. Students will apply their knowledge of anatomy, pathology and biomechanics to prosthetic management and the interdisciplinary rehabilitation for persons with lower limb amputations.

01. Critically evaluate clinical and research evidence of the aetiology and surgical management of transtibial, ankle disarticulation and partial foot amputation

02. Investigate, evaluate and analyse amputee gait applying knowledge of biomechanics of normal and prosthetic gait common to people with below knee amputations

03. Investigate, evaluate and analyse transtibial prosthetic:- gait deviations, alignment methods, alignment corrections and biomechanical functions of below knee prosthetic limbs.

04. Critically analyse, evaluate and justify selection of components including prosthetic socket designs, materials and feet to meet the needs of a range of below knee amputees, based on available evidence of function.
