Subject outline
This subject covers two industry recognised certifications from Microsoft and CompTIA. The Microsoft Technologies Associate (MTA) certification is an introductory certification. It addresses a wide spectrum of fundamental technical concepts, assesses and validates the candidate's technical ability. The CompTIA A+ is another entry level certification for individuals to begin their career in IT. It covers PC hardware and peripherals, mobile device hardware, networking and troubleshooting hardware and network connectivity issues. It also covers installing and configuring operating systems including Windows, iOS, Android, Apple OS X and Linux.

- Activities:
- Webinars and discussion forums, including practical demonstrations, to describe the various technical concepts in IT.

03. Identify the functions of hardware components of a computer system.
- Activities:
- Self-paced practical activities from the virtual environment "TestOut" where students can work within a simulated environmental.
04. Describe the main functions of an operating system and the role of utility software.
- Activities:
- Self-checking questions (online quizzes and short answer self-paced assessments) and webinars.
05. Differentiate between the main types of computer networks and explain the purpose of the network components and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different data communication media.
- Activities:
- Use the network plus module from the network-based simulated environment in "TestOut" and Cisco packet tracer to bulid a small network.
06. Install and configure an operating system.
- Activities:
- Use a virtual environment (eg: Oracle Virtual Box) to install an operating system.
