Subject outline
This subject introduces students to aspects of the legal system that regulate death and dying. Students will examine the theories, practices and procedures of coronial law and related professions in Australia. It will investigate the distinctive role of the coroner during the death investigation process to equip students with the knowledge and necessary skills to effectively participate in the inquisitorial jurisdiction. Students may also explore other areas of the legal regulation of death, such as the laws regulating cemeteries and the right to burial, power of attorney, abortion law, euthanasia and assisted suicide, and the intersection between legal and cultural approaches to death.
