Subject outline

This unit is an integrated set of lectures and tutorials covering 3 streams of information: 1) Current neuropsychological models for interpreting and describing neuropsychological disorders will be reviewed; 2) Common neuropsychological syndromes will be introduced & evaluated; 3) The assessment of these disorders will be explored. Neuropsychological models covered will include; functional systems, disorders of attention, memory & learning, executive skills & goal directed behaviour, aphasia & communication, spatial behaviour & neglect, agnosia & perceptual disorders, behavioural/emotional changes, age related changes and dementia. Syndromes related to traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular disorder, drug & alcohol abuse, and the spectrum of degenerative disorders including the dementias will be examined. Common neuropsychological tests will be practiced in class assignments. Issues in differential diagnosis will be discussed as well as writing reports and communicating information.
