SEMANTICS AND PRAGMATICS: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MEANING AND USE
LIN3SEM
2014
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
In this subject we focus on how we understand what someone is trying to communicate to us when they say or write something to us, especially how the particular words and structures are used for the purpose of getting us to understand just what the speaker intends. As what a word or structure means depends on how it is used, we will look at the physical and cultural contexts within which communication occurs, and the role they play in the communication of meaning.
