Subject outline
In this subject we consider the relation between language, culture and thought. We explore universalist versus relativist views of language in relation to topics such as kinship, colour, models and metaphors. We also explore the relationship between language and social class, gender and ethnic group, variation in language styles and registers, and factors affecting language choice in contexts of multilingualism.
