Subject outline
This interdisciplinary elective is for students from language backgrounds other than English. Course advisor approval is necessary. This subject provides students who have already met the English prerequisites for enrolment with an opportunity to further develop their academic writing and oral skills in English. The theoretical component analyses academic discourse in intercultural contexts and explores the cultural values that shape various academic discourses. The practical component includes writing an essay using English patterns of expression with explicit argument and evidence. Issues of plagiarism are addressed. Students are also encouraged to contribute to class and small group discussions. There is a secondary focus on understanding aspects of Australian culture.
