AWOL (Absent Without Official Leave)

Absent Without Official Leave (AWOL) means you are registered as a La Trobe student, but have allowed your course of study to lapse due to not enrolling in any subjects or taking official leave.

If your non-enrolment has resulted in your course status converting to Absent Without Official Leave (AWOL), your enrolment is considered lapsed and you are no longer considered a current La Trobe student. You will then need to apply again if you wish to continue studying at La Trobe, subject to the admission requirements at the time of application.

Your course status may convert to AWOL and La Trobe may cancel your CoE if you do any of the following:

  • Fail to enrol in your subjects by the Last Date to Enrol in each compulsory study period for your course. For coursework programs, compulsory study periods are:
    • Semester-based courses: Semester 1 and Semester 2
    • Term-based courses: Term 2, 3, 4 and 5
  • Fail to return to study after an approved Leave of Absence or enforced suspension
  • Intended to stop studying at La Trobe but you did not formally discontinue from your course
  • If you are a Graduate Research student and your maximum completion date (MCD) has passed, and your enrolment has moved to a lapsed status.

If your CoE is cancelled and your inactive status reported to the Department of Home Affairs, an email will be sent to your student and nominated personal email accounts to notify you of the cancellation.

La Trobe does not report inactive status during scheduled semester breaks or non-compulsory study periods (unless you are commencing your studies in this study period).

Will the cancellation of my CoE affect my student visa?

Any decision regarding your student visa is the sole responsibility of the Department of Home Affairs. La Trobe does not and cannot cancel your visa.

Please consult with the Department of Home Affairs for visa-related enquiries, including potential implications to your student visa if your CoE is cancelled.
