Request for a Short Extension of Time to submit an assessment task

Procedures relating to Short Extension of Time are outlined in the Assessment Procedure - Adjustments (including Special Consideration).

You can request a Short Extension of Time of three (3) calendar days when you experience short-term difficult circumstances that impact the completion of an eligible assessment task.

The Short Extension of Time process is not permitted for Point-in-Time Assessments, as Point-in-Time Assessments occur at a specific or fixed time and can only be held at the designated time or period. e.g. quizzes, observed practice, live presentations.

Please consider whether your circumstances warrant an application for Special Consideration.

Examples of Point-in-Time Assessments include:

  • Online Quizzes: Assessments that must be completed within a set period.
  • Live Presentations: Assessments requiring real-time participation, such as oral presentations or group discussions.
  • Clinical Observations: Practical assessments that involve direct observation and evaluation in a clinical or practical setting.

How to apply

Submit a request via the Assessment Adjustment form in StudentOnLine.

Applications for Short Extension of Time must be submitted no later than 11.59pm (Melbourne time) on the due date of the assessment.

An extension of three (3) calendar days is automatically approved, and no evidence is required (with the exception of Learning Access Plans).

After you submit your form, you will receive your new date in a few minutes.

Short Extension of Time can only be granted once for each assessment for students who do not have a LAP with relevant provisions.

Students with a Learning Access Plan (LAP)

If you have an LAP and need an extension, you should still apply using the Assessment Adjustment form within the designated timeframe. Please attach your LAP to the Assessment Adjustment form as your supporting evidence.

If you have an approved LAP that includes up to 10 days extension, please submit a Short Extension of Time application to receive the automatic 7 days extension. You can then apply for an additional short extension of 7 days for the same assessment, if required.

When submitting an additional Short Extension of Time application, if your extension request is 7 days beyond the first extension date, and your LAP states you can apply for up to 10 days (LAP), enter your adjusted due date from your first approved extension when prompted to enter original due date.

For example:

  1. First Short Extension of Time application: if your assessment was due on 10 March, enter 10 March as the original due date.
  1. Additional Short Extension of Time application: if your assessment was originally due on 10 March, enter 17 March the original due date (i.e. the new due date from your first Short Extension of Time application).

If your existing circumstances exacerbate, or a new circumstance that is not stipulated in your LAP occurs, you should submit a new Special Consideration application.

Outcome

Short Extensions of Time applied for within the timeframe are automatically processed. You will receive an email conforming your new due date within minutes of submitting your form.
