Reset password

If you need to reset your La Trobe password, there are several options available. Follow the steps to regain access to your account securely.

Password reset tool

This tool allows you to reset your La Trobe student password from a web browser. This can also be used if your password has expired by clicking on the 'Forgot My Password' link. However, will need to be registered before you can use it.

When resetting your password, you must enter your username using the format 12345678@students.ltu.edu.au. We strongly recommend you restart your computer after changing your password.

If this does not work, please contact us to complete a password reset for you.

Password guidelines

What are the password complexity requirements?

Must be at least 12 characters long.

What can I use to make a stronger password?

Contain at least 3 of the 4 following types of characters

  • Upper case (A, B, C, D, E ...)
  • Lower case (a, b, c, d, e ...)
  • Number (1, 2, 3, 4, ...)
  • Non alpha-numeric (!, @, #, $ ...)

What shouldn't I use in my password?

  • Not use any part of your name
  • Not use any numbers from your date of birth
  • Not use 3 or more consecutive letters from the start of your first given name, other given names, or family name - For example, if your name is “John Paul Smith” you cannot use “joh” or “pau” or “smi” in your password.
  • Not use any simple words like “hello” “password”

Reset password methods

Portal Method (Pre-requisites):

  • You know what your existing La Trobe password is.
  • You are using a computer that has internet access.

Instructions:

  1. Navigate to our update password portal
  2. Enter your student username e.g. 01234567@students.ltu.edu.au into the first field.
  3. Enter your existing password into the Old Password field.
  4. Enter a new password into the New Password field.
  5. Re-enter your new password in the 'Confirm New Password' field.
  6. Click 'Submit'.

Control-Alt-Delete Method (Pre-requisites):

  • You know what your existing La Trobe password is.
  • You are using a Windows computer connected to La Trobe's network.
  • You are using a La Trobe computer that is logged into a La Trobe account.

Instructions:

  1. Press 'CTRL-ALT-DELETE'. The Windows Security dialog appears.
  2. Click 'Change Password'. The 'Change Password' dialog box appears.
  3. In the Log on to box, click 'STUDENTS' to change your student password.
  4. In the 'User name' field, type your username.
  5. In the 'Old Password' field, type your existing password.
  6. In the 'New Password' field, type your new password.
  7. In the 'Confirm New Password' field, re-type your new password.
  8. Click 'OK'.

Please note: Your password must adhere to the password complexity requirements.

FAQ

  • You must register with the self-service password reset tool before you can use it to change your password.
  • You must already know your La Trobe Student password to successfully enrol. If you do not know your password, please contact the Student IT Support for assistance.
  • You will need to register at least one mobile phone device or one alternate email address.
  • A verification code will be sent to either your mobile phone or your alternate email address.
  • Enter this code to verify and complete your registration with the self-service password reset tool.
  • Ensure all browser windows are closed after registration.

  2. Authenticator or Student Alternate email address).  
    Enter your La Trobe username and the security code displayed.
  3. Click Send Verification Code button to send verification to your registered mobile phone or alternate email address.
  4. Enter this code to change your password.

When you change or reset your password you are changing your password for all of the systems you log into with your La Trobe accounts. Such as the LMS, StudentOnline, Student Emails and many more.

Once you have successfully changed your password you will need to use your new password to access these systems.
