Exclusion and suspension

Actions that result in exclusion or suspension of your enrolment may affect your student visa status.

There are various reasons that your enrolment may be suspended or cancelled, including but not limited to:

What is an exclusion or suspension?

If you fail to meet satisfactory course progress or engage in academic or other misconduct, you may be excluded or suspended from your course or the University. La Trobe is required to report any exclusions or suspensions to the Department of Home Affairs, which will cancel your current Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) and may affect your student visa.

We understand that going through the exclusion or suspension process can be very difficult, and we encourage you to access the range of supports available to you as a student of La Trobe. The Student Wellbeing team offers a range of welfare support.

If you are excluded, your enrolment will be terminated, and you won’t be eligible to re-apply until the end of your exclusion period. You will be notified once your exclusion is reported to the Department of Home Affairs, and your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) is cancelled.

The Department of Home Affairs will review all available information and may consider cancelling your student visa. If they decide to proceed, they will send you a Notice of Intention to Consider Cancellation before making a final decision.

During your exclusion period, you must still comply with the conditions of your student visa to stay in Australia. You may need to enrol in a new course of study at the same AQF level as your original visa within 28 days of your CoE cancellation, either at La Trobe or another education provider. Failing to do so may result in the cancellation of your student visa.

If your exclusion is specific to your course and not the entire University, you may be able to apply to enrol in another course at La Trobe during your exclusion period.

Your exclusion period could be for a set duration, or permanent.

If you are suspended, your enrolment will be cancelled for a specified period and you have the automatic right to return once the suspension period ends. You don’t need to reapply for your course after a suspension.

You will be notified when your suspension is reported to the Department of Home Affairs, along with an updated Agreed Progression Plan (APP). If your course completion date changes due to the suspension, you will need to apply for a new Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).

If your suspension lasts more than 6 months, your student visa may be cancelled. You can check your visa status via the Department of Home Affairs Check visa details and conditions for visa holders webpage to confirm if your student visa is still valid.

If your student visa is cancelled or expires before you return to Australia, you will need to apply for a new student visa.
