Subject outline
This subject aims to provide you with the skills, knowledge and attitudes required by nurses in the provision of patient-centred care for persons experiencing an acute illness requiring hospitalisation and/or surgery. Specific foci: Application of the clinical reasoning cycle to patients with acute healthcare concerns across the lifespan with a particular focus on the cardiovascular, respiratory and endocrine diseases to address National Health Priority areas and; Assessment of inflammation, acute pain and three of the National Health Priority Areas (cardiovascular, respiratory and endocrine) across the lifespan. Techniques explored include: Hospital admission; Care of a patient requiring: surgery, intravenous fluids and oxygen, wound management, acute pain management or hemodynamic monitoring. Nursing management: Concepts of patient safety; Concept of the deteriorating patient and how to recognise and report this phenomenon and; Assertiveness and negotiation skills.

For students enrolled in HBN, HBNM, HBNUP, HBNPRW, RBN - Bachelor of Nursing or HZNM or HZNMD-Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery then must pass NSG1INA and NSG1NAM.

01. On successful completion of this subject the students are expected to be able to: a) Utilise the principles of patient safety in clinical practice to minimize the incidence and impact of adverse events and maximize patient recovery b) Describe the harm caused by adverse events in healthcare c) Discuss models of patient safety d) Demonstrate strategies that can minimise errors in the provision of healthcare including but not limited to checking patient identification, clear communication skills, and accurate documentation e) Utilise the open disclosure processes to accurately and honestly report errors and near misses in a timely manner f) Recognise and report a deteriorating patient condition in the clinical setting

02. Utilise clinical reasoning to develop an appropriate evidenced based, person centred care plan for persons experiencing an interruption to their health requiring hospitalisation and or surgery across the lifespan a). Demonstrate person centred healthcare through utilisation of strategies that engage the patient, family and carer as a member of the healthcare team whilst respecting developmental age, dignity, culture, values, beliefs and rights of individual/groups b). Competently perform focused systematic assessment of patient, family and carers c). Discuss clinical manifestations of presenting condition related to pathophysiology including patient experiencing alterations in cardiovascular, respiratory and endocrine systems

03. Demonstrate competence in technical skills when caring for patients experiencing interruptions to health requiring hospitalisation a). Implement patient identification procedures to prevent wrong patient, wrong site, wrong procedure b). Demonstrate competence in technical and nursing skills according to guidelines including care of patient requiring acute hospital admission and or surgery, intravenous therapy and fluid balance monitoring, hemodynamic monitoring and electrocardiographs, oxygen therapy and oxygenation monitoring, acute pain, and a surgical wound management c) Apply the Aseptic Non-Touch Technique Framework to patient care encounters d). Utilise multiple methods for communicating risk regarding treatment options to patient family and carers across the lifespan

04. Practice within the legal and ethical standards governing nursing practice and healthcare a). Recognise and work within the limits of your professional competence taking into account the level of experience and support required to provide safe care b).Describe the roles of team members and the different types of health care teams (multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and trans disciplinary teams) c). Identify your own values and assumptions and know how these affect interactions with other members of the health care team d).Practice within the policy and guidelines of organisations e).Critically reflect on own nursing practice, values and belief and the consequences of these for individuals and groups

05. Implement non-technical skills in patient care interaction to promote safe and competent patient care for patients, families and carers across the lifespan a). Identify non-technical skills required for safe healthcare practice b). Describe the impact of non-technical skills on patient outcomes c). Implement appropriate strategies for effective communication in healthcare setting with team members, patient, families and carers d). Demonstrate task management skills including planning and preparation, prioritising, maintaining standards and identifying and utilising resources to adequately organise tasks e). Utilise situational awareness to inform decision making f). Demonstrate decision making skills to reach a judgement about a situation.
