Discontinuation
Discontinuation of Enrolment after commencement in your course, is also known as Course Withdrawal. It is important that you are certain of your decision, as after you withdraw from a course, you are no longer an enrolled student at La Trobe University.
You must be aware that withdrawing from your subjects is not the same as discontinuing your enrolment, and you must still submit a formal Discontinuation of Enrolment to leave your course.
Important Considerations
- Visa conditions: Ensure you understand your visa conditions. To comply with and retain your visa, you must be studying a CRICOS registered course in Australia.
- Timing: There are no specific deadlines for discontinuing, but the timing of your withdrawal can have consequences. Check the withdrawal dates for academic penalties and refund eligibility before applying to Discontinue your Enrolment. Withdraw before the relevant Census date for any enrolled subject/s to avoid unexpected fees. Withdrawing after the Census date may result in additional fees, while withdrawing before the Census date makes you eligible for a refund.
- Release restrictions: Verify if you are currently release-restricted, as this may impact your eligibility to discontinue. Visit the Release webpage for more information about how to verify if you are release-restricted.
How to apply for Discontinuation of Enrolment
You must complete the online Discontinuation of Enrolment form.
Discussions with a lecturer or course coordinator do not constitute official notification. You must complete the online Discontinuation of Enrolment form.
After your application is approved
- Notification: La Trobe will cancel your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) and notify the Department of Home Affairs that you are no longer studying with us.
- Remaining in Australia: If you intend to stay in Australia, you will need a new offer and CoE for a course at the same Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level as your current student visa within 28 days of the cancellation of your La Trobe CoE. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of your student visa.
- Returning Home: If you plan to return to your home country, you should leave Australia within 28 days from the day your CoE is cancelled to avoid visa cancellation.
- Transferring to another provider: If you are discontinuing to study with another provider and have not completed six calendar months in your La Trobe course, you will need to apply for a letter of Release from La Trobe. Note: a Release from La Trobe is not guaranteed and students should wait until the outcome of their release application is received before formally discontinuing their enrolment.
