Under 18 years of age support (La Trobe students)

La Trobe University accepts international students under the age of 18 who can demonstrate adequate welfare arrangements are in place (approved by the Department of Home Affairs).

To gain admission, you must have a nominated guardian who is 21 years old or over (this can be your parent, a relative or a custodian) who will be responsible for your welfare and reside with you in Australia until you turn 18. You must include your Form 157N Nomination of a Student Guardian as part of your student visa application.

The University does not permit alternative welfare arrangements (e.g. homestays). International students can apply to live on campus when they are 18 years old or over.

University support

As an under 18 year old student, an International Student Advisor will contact you once you arrive onshore to organise regular meetings and ensure you are receiving adequate and age-appropriate support until you turn 18.

These meetings are compulsory to support your transition to on-campus study and living in Australia, including connecting you to relevant support services within and outside of the University.

It is important to let the University know as soon as there are any changes with your welfare arrangements.

If your student guardian leaves Australia while you remain onshore, they must nominate another guardian and obtain Home Affairs approval.
