Subject outline

This subject provides an understanding of Commonwealth income tax legislation and the implications of income tax on individuals and businesses. A problem solving, application-based approach is taken to the subject matter. You will study the general concepts of assessable income and allowable deductions (including substantiation provisions) and be introduced to capital gains and fringe benefits tax. The taxation of entities will also be covered, including the taxation of partnerships, companies and trusts. The subject will also cover the basic aspects of tax administration and assessments, objections and appeals.

Intended Learning Outcomes

01. Analyse the basic principles of Australian taxation and its related case law, including examination and application of tax residency criteria, as well as identification and application of principles of ordinary and statutory income.
02. Analyse and apply the principles and rules regarding specific items that further extend ordinary and statutory income, such as taxation of compensation, superannuation benefits, employment termination payments, capital gains and fringe benefits, for the purposes of calculating final tax liability.
03. Analyse and apply the tax principles and rules concerning general and specific deductions, as well as tax offsets for the purposes of calculating final tax liability of individuals and businesses.
04. Analyse and apply the basic tax principles and rules regarding the taxation of partnerships and trusts as well as the tax implications for partners and trust beneficiaries.
05. Appreciate the basic principles of tax administration, tax compliance and tax dispute, applying taxation principles and rules to provide advice on case-based scenarios, including the calculation of final tax liability.
