Subject outline
This subject investigates the brain. Ultimately, behaviour is the outcome of cellular and molecular processes within the brain, and subtle changes in brain physiology will result in spectacular and often debilitating behavioural pathologies. Therapeutic intervention based on psychotropic drugs aims to restore or tweak brain physiology - while conceptually a sound approach, our understanding of how neurophysiology ultimately is expressed in behaviour, is limited. As a consequence, this subject will not provide you with answers, but aims to enable you to critically appraise therapeutic intervention. In addition, the pharmacy practice issues relating to neuropsychiatry will be addressed in a manner that highlights how psychotropic drugs can ameliorate the various disease states, and how they affect the overall condition of the patient.
