Subject outline

In this subject, students will be introduced to physiological control and the body systems involved in control and the relevant pharmacology . The subject consists of a base module (6 weeks) that will cover basic principles of pharmacology introducing pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and receptive mechanisms. The following 3 modules will consist of the physiology and pharmacology of the nervous system, nerve impulse propagation and transmission, the operation of the nervous and endocrine systems (with special emphasis on the autonomic nervous system) and the pharmacology of drugs acting at synaptic and neuromuscular sites. The practical component will introduce the use of physiological equipment, and ethical considerations for animal and human experimentation.
