Subject outline

In this subject, students will begin to acquire the foundation knowledge about normal communication and swallowing to serve as a basis for their future studies in speech pathology. They will acquire knowledge about the structure and function of the body systems and linguistic frameworks relevant to speech pathology practice across the lifespan. Students will be introduced to all areas of practice in speech pathology. Students will also discuss the WHO's International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF) and Evidence Based Practice and be asked to apply these frameworks to problems that occur in the scope of speech pathology practice. Problem-Based Learning tutorials will supplement seminars and practical classes as the contexts for acquiring knowledge.

Prerequisites: This bridging course is only taken by Graduate Entry Master of Speech Pathology (HMSPB and HMSP) students before they join the combined degree students in semester 1.

Special conditions: This subject must be completed by all graduate entry Master of Speech Pathology (HMSPB and HMSP) students prior to commencement of all other subject requirements. Students in the combined degree program do not take this subject.
