Subject outline

In this subject, the focus is on developing beginning interpersonal helping skills which relate to theoretical material covered in SWP4APA. Students are expected to play an active role in group-based learning and develop an awareness of group dynamics and group process. To facilitate interpersonal helping skill development, students participate in role play exercises. These exercises help students learn to: (i) establish the context of practise, (ii) develop an effective working alliance, (iii) identify the client's perspective, (iv) develop a sense of the client's strengths and issues, and (v) set a direction for future work. Central to the subject is the development of critical awareness of self, including the student's style as a worker.
