Subject outline

In this subject, an applied kinesiological approach to anatomy is adopted. The following topics are introduced: joint stability and centres of rotation; principles of muscle action, resolution of muscle forces acting about joint centres of rotation, and the effect of gravity on the elements of the musculoskeletal system, particularly with reference to posture . These principles are then applied to the major joints of the vertebral column and the upper and lower limbs. Relevant neurovascular structures are also examined in each region. Lectures are supported by practical classes including examination of appropriate cadaver material. Students are encouraged to explore areas of particular interest by completing a dissection-based project in second semester.
