University sourced industry placements

Each semester, La Trobe offers a limited number of competitive, University-sourced placements.

These placement opportunities are available through a select number of placement subjects (both multidisciplinary and discipline/school specific subjects).  Consultation with your Course Coordinator is recommended or you can reach out to ASK La Trobe to find out what works best for you.

To be considered, you must submit a strong application including an updated CV that demonstrates your skills, interests, and readiness for industry experience. Priority is given to well-prepared applications, so it’s important to plan ahead and follow the application instructions carefully.

Undergraduate students

You will need to apply for a University Sourced placement through a competitive application process.

Depending on your course and the placement subject you enrol in, you may be required to apply for specific listed opportunities, or you may need to submit a general application outlining your ideal host and placement opportunity.

If your application is successful, you may be shortlisted for a placement opportunity and further communication will be sent to you. Placements are not guaranteed and are based on the information that you provide in your application.

How to apply

Postgraduate students

Postgraduate students applying for University Sourced placements will undertake a formal, competitive application process designed to mirror the real job market and help build employability skills.

You may submit applications for up to 3 listed placement opportunities. As this is a competitive process, it’s important to plan ahead before applying.

After enrolling in LTU5IND, you will receive an email with instructions and access to InPlace to complete your application.

Support available

Use Career Ready Assist to build your resume, cover letter and practice interview skills.

Other placement options

A student sourced placement is an opportunity sourced by you to fulfil the requirements of your course and career goals.

Sourcing your own opportunity allows you to target specific organisations that you'd like to work with and undertake a range of tasks - negotiated by you with a potential host organisation.

Students who have a clear idea about the type of placement they want, or who have a specific organisation or role in mind, are encouraged to source their own placement to better align with their goals.

"Vacation" or "internship" programs are a great way to apply skills and gain valuable experience which may lead to a graduate program entry or direct employment opportunities.

These programs are offered across a broad range of organisations and study disciplines, including Accounting, Finance, Cyber security, Marketing, Communications and Environmental Sustainability.

Many websites advertise these opportunities, such as Grad ConnectionGrad Australia, and Career Hub.

Did you know that these programs may be used to gain credit towards your degree?

When undertaking an internship program, it may be possible for students to concurrently enrol into one or more of La Trobe’s WIL subjects and use the internship experience to fulfill the industry placement requirements of the subject/s (subject to approval from the Subject Coordinator).

How do I apply?

Students must submit a Student Sourced application prior to the subject closing date. The application will then be assessed and must be approved by La Trobe before you can commence in a placement.
